How to Renew Your Barber License by State

Barber license renewal is stricter than you would expect
Here is something that surprises a lot of barbers: in most states, barber license renewal has more continuing education requirements than cosmetology license renewal. California requires zero CE hours for cosmetologists but requires barbers to complete a sanitation and safety update. Texas requires 4 CE hours for both, but barbers have a separate board with different approved providers. It is not the same process, and mixing them up leads to rejected renewals.
Every state requires barbers to renew their license every 1 to 3 years. Let it lapse and you are working illegally. Let it lapse long enough and you are retaking the practical exam. Here is the state-by-state breakdown from our database of 1,057 license types across 50 states.
Barber license renewal: top 10 states
| State | Renewal cycle | CE hours | Renewal fee | Board/portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| California | Every 2 years | 0 (health & safety update form) | $50 | Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BreEZe) |
| Texas | Every 2 years | 4 hours | $68 | TDLR (Texas Dept. of Licensing) |
| Florida | Every 2 years | 16 hours (includes HIV/AIDS) | $55 | DBPR (Dept. of Business & Professional Regulation) |
| New York | Every 4 years | 4 hours | $40 | NY Dept. of State |
| Georgia | Every 2 years | 5 hours | $35 | Georgia Board of Barbers |
| Illinois | Every 2 years | 14 hours | $60 | IDFPR |
| Ohio | Every 2 years | 8 hours | $45 | Ohio State Barber Board |
| North Carolina | Every 3 years | 24 hours | $50 | NC Board of Barber Examiners |
| Pennsylvania | Every 2 years | 6 hours | $54 | PALS (PA Licensing System) |
| Michigan | Every 2 years | 0 | $58 | LARA |
The CE hour breakdown
States that require continuing education for barbers are specific about what topics count:
- Florida (16 hours): Must include HIV/AIDS awareness (1 hour), sanitation and sterilization, chemical safety. These are some of the highest CE requirements in the country for barbers.
- Illinois (14 hours): Must include sanitation, Illinois barber law updates, and professional ethics. At least 4 hours must be in-person (the rest can be online).
- North Carolina (24 hours): The highest CE requirement for barbers among the top 50 states. Includes sanitation, razor techniques, and business management.
- Ohio (8 hours): Sanitation, bloodborne pathogens, Ohio barber law review.
Use only state board-approved CE providers. Hours from non-approved providers will not count, and you will discover this when your renewal gets rejected, potentially after your license has already expired.
How to renew your barber license online
Every state on our list offers online renewal. The process is similar everywhere:
- Log into your state board's licensing portal (links in the table above)
- Verify your personal information and current address
- Upload or confirm CE completion (if required)
- Pay the renewal fee
- Print your temporary renewal confirmation
Timing tip: Start the renewal process 45 to 60 days before your expiration date. CE providers can be slow to submit your completion to the state board. If there is a discrepancy, you need time to resolve it before your license expires.
What happens when your barber license expires
The consequences depend on how long it has been:
- Expired less than 90 days: Most states allow late renewal with a penalty fee (usually 1.5x to 2x the normal renewal fee). You should not work during this period.
- Expired 90 days to 1 year: Many states require a reinstatement application, extra CE hours, and a higher fee. Georgia charges a $100 reinstatement fee on top of the renewal fee.
- Expired 1 to 3 years: Several states require you to pass a written exam again before reinstatement.
- Expired more than 3 years: Florida, North Carolina, and several other states require the full practical exam. That means going back to basics with mannequin heads and timed cuts in front of an examiner.
Working with an expired barber license is a misdemeanor in most states. If a client complains or an inspector visits your shop, an expired license turns a minor issue into a legal problem. Read more about the consequences in our expired business license guide.
Barber license vs. barbershop license
Your barber license lets you personally cut hair. Your barbershop also needs a separate establishment license from the state board. These are two different licenses with different renewal dates, different fees, and different requirements.
The establishment license requires the shop to pass a sanitation inspection. If you are a booth renter, the shop owner holds the establishment license, but you still need your own individual barber license.
Barber license vs. cosmetology license: key differences
In most states, barber and cosmetology licenses are issued by different boards or different divisions of the same board. Key differences:
- Scope: Barber licenses typically cover haircutting, shaving, and facial hair grooming. Cosmetology licenses cover hair, nails, and skincare.
- CE requirements: Often different, even in the same state. Pennsylvania requires 6 CE hours for barbers but 0 for cosmetologists.
- Fees: Usually similar, but check your specific state.
- Reciprocity: If you move to a new state, barber license reciprocity rules are different from cosmetology reciprocity rules.
